Coding for a Cause for Volunteers

This is our third year running Coding for a Cause, an event in which, in the true Drupal tradition, developers, themers and anyone with talents such as graphics, copywriting and project management, contribute time and good will, to come together to help build a website for a worthy nonprofit --- all in one day.

It's just like in America's early pioneer days, when town residents would all team together to help build a neighbor's home. But here it's a website. Our own digital Barn Raising.

Our goals are to have the participants learn by working in pairs or small groups, made up of an experienced Drupaller and one or more less-experienced volunteers. The mentors will learn by teaching, and the new people get to learn on a real-world project. You also have a chance to keep the good feeling going all year round by volunteering to maintain the nonprofit website you built.

We are also taking copious notes about the whole charity hackathon process that we can share with other Drupal communities around the world. Help us set a good example! Write some blog posts or tweets, upload photos, even make a video about this if you like!

Schedule

All Coding for a Cause participants, including participating nonprofits, should attend our orientation meeting on Sat., Feb 11 at 4:15-5 PM in the TechWell Room. At that meeting, we will describe the plan for the Sunday Coding for a Cause activities, how we will organize teams, what you need to bring, etc.

The main event runs from 9 am - 5 pm on Sunday, Feb 12th, 2012 at Rollins College.

Where should you be on Sunday to participate? We've secured a safe haven for attention focus and comradery: The basement of the Rollins Crummer School of Business building. ( See this campus map, http://tars.rollins.edu/tour/index_flash.htm )

The three Central Florida nonprofits we will be building websites for include:

Feed Florida First

Feed Florida First is a food assembling & packaging event to help feed hungry families and children in the Central Florida area, presented by The Central Florida Center for Spiritual Living and Kids Care International Outreach. All of the meals packaged went to feed families in our own backyard. All meals went to the Bread of Life, Christian Service Center, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and Loaves & Fishes where they will be redistributed to an estimated 246,519 people going hungry each week right here in Orange & Seminole counties.

Aerostars or Orlando Center for Youth Aviation

Aerostars is a new program of the Orlando Center for Youth Aviation which encourages disadvantaged kids (ages 10-18 years old) in Central Florida to "take their dreams to flight ": They introduce kids to aviation as a science, through a series of aviation classes, encouraging interest in STEM via the adventurous appeal of aviation. Through their Young Eagles program, associated with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Aerostars provides kids with direct hands-on air flight training.

Coding for a Cause developers will be building Aerostars it's first website. We will be using the Mix and Match theme ( http://drupal.org/project/mix_and_match) Material for content copy and graphics has been assembled and we have a rough wireframe and is ready to go. We are taking inspiration from the Royal Air Force Academy Air Cadets site (http://www.raf.mod.uk/aircadets/) We just need you to help us do it!

Core Project Team: Jim Thomas (Client), Joe Moraca (Tech Lead), Lisa Thorell (Project Manager), Angelina Rotundo (1st Themer)

Victim Service Center

In February 1999, the Victim Service Center of Orange County was opened under the auspices of Orange County Government to provide a full range of survivor-centered services to any crime survivor who resides in or who was victimized in Orange County, Florida. Orange County Government, in conjunction with the State Attorneys Office, law enforcement, and FloridaHospital developed the Sexual Assault Treatment Center as a component of the VictimServiceCenter.

The Sexual Assault Treatment Center is a stand-alone facility offering a homelike, confidential environment where sexual assault survivors may receive medical intervention services provided by a specially trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, at one safe, private location.

In 2001 the VictimServiceCenter became incorporated as a non-profit organization.

Some Tech Things to Know

All three websites will be built using the OpenOutreach distribution (http://openoutreach.org) from Chocolate Lily, running on top of Drupal 7. Hey - you'll enjoy playing with this cool, new distro!

WebEnabled, one of Florida DrupalCamp's sponsors, has kindly agreed to provide hosting for our development environment.

Please Get a WebEnabled.com Account to Participate

You will need to go to http://webenabled.com and sign up for a free account. Once you do, you will need to keep track of your WebEnabled username - we will need that to add you to our Git repository.

Ultimately you will be checking your code out of Git from WebEnabled and grabbing a database dump.

What Should You Bring with You?

1. Your excellent drupal skills, copy-writing, graphic skills or a willingness to learn.
2. Computer, pre-loaded with Drupal 7 environment, a text editor and a git client, if possible.
3. Any power supplies, extension cords and power strips are appreciated.
4. Your own special snacks, but we will have coffee and snacks available throughout the day.
